TRAFFIC CONTROL PERSON – TCP (Flagging)

This two-day comprehensive, standardized training curriculum for TCP’s is the only course accepted by WorkSafe BC under Section 18 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation for high-risk traffic control.  Upon successful completion, TCPs are provided with a three-year record of completion.  This training is required by everyone working in Traffic Control in BC.

Course Content:

  • Roles and responsibilities

  • Setting up, maintaining and removing work zones
  • Working safely around equipment
  • Hazard Idenfication and assessment
  • Traffic control plans
  • Traffic control skills
  • Communication skills
  • Practical skills

 Duration – 16 hours, contains 1/2 day of practical training
Number of Participants – Maximum 14
Certifying Body – British Columbia Construction Safety Alliance (BCCSA)
Certificate Expiry – 3 years
PPE – CSA approved steel toe safety boots, weather appropriate clothing,
Prerequisites – Must be 16 years of age, driver’s license recommended

TRAFFIC CONTROL LANE TECHNICIAN

This different aspect of Traffic Control is explored to enhance the participant’s knowledge to safely set up a multitude of construction work zone configurations.  All requirements for the BCCSA and the Dept. of Motor Vehicles for lane closure and work zone set-ups are reviewed and discussed during training.

Throughout this comprehensive 6 hours of training you will learn the evolving necessity for qualified Lane Technicians and what a Lane Technician duties and responsibilities are and what they actually do.

Contents

Theory (3 Hours)

  • Review of the Traffic Control Manual for Work on Roadways
  • Review of WorkSafeBC OHS Regulations
  • Physical requirements
  • Customer Service Skills
  • Duties and Responsibilities
  • Hazard Assessments
  • Journaling

Practical (3 Hours)

  • Review of Lane Closure vehicles and their inventory and equipment
  • Hands on work with varied Traffic Control setups of varying complexity

Duration – 6 hours

Certifying Body – Domcor Health Safety & Security Inc.
Certificate Expiry – 1 year

Prerequisites:

  • Current Traffic Control Certification (BCCSA)
  • Valid B.C. Driver’s License
  • Minimum 6 months experience as a Traffic Control Person
  • Minimum Occupational First Aid Level 1 certification

TCP – SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY FOR SAFETY

The TCP supervisor responsibility for safety course consists of 8 hours of comprehensive implementable training specifically designed to address the traffic control supervisor’s responsibilities. The course provides the supervisor with a clear understanding of the reasons and need for due diligence and the implications of the legislation surrounding safety in the workplace and on the road site. The course also deals with new and young worker orientation giving the supervisor the knowledge to implement and teach safer workplace practices in order to modify safety behaviour resulting in a safer work environment. The course is designed to build both knowledge and confidence for the supervisor managing staff.  A certificate of completion will be provided at the end of the course.

  • Bill C45 and Legislation 2.17.1 of the criminal code
  • Due Diligence
  • The four cornerstones of due diligence
  • New & young worker orientation
  • Understanding supervisor responsibilities

  • The execution of traffic control is required to be completed with compliance to specific regulations which are provided under:
    • Work Safe BC, Occupational Health & Safety Regs (OHS)
    • Ministry of Transport (MOT)
    • The BCCSA regulates the training of traffic control persons all of who are to successfully complete the TCP course and be ticketed prior to working on a job site.
  • TCP risk assessment analysis and documentation
  • Accident / incident reporting and documentation

Certificate Expiry – None
Exam – Ongoing Skills evaluation,
              multiple choice tests and an overall grade of 70%

ROAD HAZARD AWARENESS

This course is designed for the non-traffic control trained person who works alongside road ways and may be exposed to traffic; such as lawn mowing or gardening, sidewalk maintenance, or tree trimming etc.

Where traffic control is required a qualified and licenced TCP must be on site to direct traffic.

TWO WAY RADIO PROCEDURES

A two way radio when used correctly becomes a vital communication tool for work site; hospitals, road construction, schools, construction sites etc.  They are used for communicating information in a timely manner are can be a key in providing an efficient and safe work environment.  This course will provide the participant with the information needed to use the radio correctly and safely.

  • Understanding how the radio works
  • Communicating clearly
  • Radio care and maintenance
  • Two way radio protocol
  • Effective communication with a radio
  • Dealing with surrounding noise
  • Radio safety
  • Importance of channel selection
  • Radio users alphabet
  • Radio users language
