WILDERNESS AWARENESS – BEAR / COUGAR / TICK / WASP / WOLF / MOOSE / DEER

 This course prepares you for wildlife encounters and teaches observation of your surroundings that may help keep you safe.

Course Content:

WILDERNESS AWARENESS

There are many animals that when encountered will leave you alone, however situation arise when you need to know what to do to ensure your own safety, when predators do the unpredictable. This course covers many of the wildlife species that are encountered around the countryside, and includes, Bears, Cougars, Wolves, Coyotes, Deer, Moose, Elk, Ticks, Wasps, Spiders, Snakes, Poisonous plants, and the deadly Rodent Hanta Virus.

BASIC CHAINSAW OPERATOR SAFETY

There are serious chainsaw injuries every year many of which are attributed to first time operators and occasional chainsaw users. Participation in our Basic Chainsaw Operator Safety course can help you meet the requirements of legislation, and give the participant the confidence they need to operate a chainsaw safely. This course is suitable for new users, occasional users and users where chainsaw operation is not part of their everyday tasks. This course has both classroom and practical components. By the conclusion of the course, students will know about hazards, personal protective equipment, sharpening and refuelling, the most common cuts made. There is approximately 4 hours of classroom instruction followed by actual chainsaw practice for the remainder of the day.

PPE: Participants will require to provide their own CSA approved safety boots as well as their own industrial gloves and must wear tight clothing.
Chainsaw chaps (pants) earmuffs, hard hat, Hi-viz vest and safety eye wear will be provided.
Participants are requested to remain clear of the student practicing cutting, during the practical demonstration.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

This is NOT a faller certification course. This training is for those who use chainsaws periodically; to provide a fundamental understanding of safe chainsaw use and injury prevention.

S100 FIRE SUPPRESSION

Upon successful completion of the course, students will demonstrate a basic knowledge of wildfire suppression, wildfire behaviour plus safety procedures.  Students will also learn practical skills with equipment used in BC to effectively and safely respond to wildfires.  Course includes one day of in class theory and a half day of field demonstration on how to set up a fire pump and construct hand fire guards.  Student is required to bring personal protective equipment (PPE).

S-185 FIRE ENTRAPMENT AVOIDANCE & SAFETY COURSE

The S-185 course teaches the basic principles of fire-line safety.  The participant will be able to evaluate potential fire entrapment situations and know how to remove himself or herself safely from a potentially risky situation.  The goal of this course is to ensure that the firefighter will know how to deploy the necessary resources using safe and efficient strategies and tactics to prevent loss of life when unexpected situations occur.

HELICOPTER SAFETY & SIGNALLING

 This course provides the participants with an overview of the regulations as well as good industry safety practices around logging helicopters. It also provides guidelines for developing safe work procedures in forest industry helicopter operations. Helicopter logging is a fast paced operation with numerous events happening simultaneously or in rapid sequence, knowledgeable workers and good planning as well as effective coordination of activities ensure both safety and health of all involved.
