SAFE WORK PRACTICES FOR ASBESTOS

Asbestos is a hazardous material. If Employers and workers do not take proper precautions for work around asbestos, workers may develop serious chronic health problems or even die of an asbestos-related disease. To prevent these health problems, WorkSafeBC has developed requirements detailed in the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation (the Regulation). In this course we discuss these regulations as well as the responsibilities of the Employer, supervisor and worker. The participants will learn how to avoid being exposed to asbestos, the correct PPE to be worn and what control measures are required. We will also discuss risk assessment, the importance of accurate record keeping, correct documentation, work procedure and correct disposal of asbestos.

LEAD AWARENESS

Lead dust and fumes inhalation or consumption can lead to lead poisoning and have severe health consequences. This awareness course will help you understand the risks to your health that lead poisoning can cause.

Lead interferes with a variety of body processes and is toxic to many organs and tissues including the heart, bones, intestines, kidneys, and reproductive and nervous systems.

It interferes with the development of the nervous system and is therefore particularly toxic to children, causing potentially permanent learning and behavior disorders.

Symptoms include abdominal pain, confusion, headache, anemia, irritability, and in severe cases seizures, coma, and death.

This course will also help you identify the sources of lead dust and fumes and provide information on the methods of protecting yourself. The course also provides information on best practices for an exposure control plan and how to implement it, as well as lead removal and or abatement.

Recertification is available for this course in year 2 and 3.
