The purpose of this 40-hour mandatory security course developed by the Justice Institute of British Columbia, was to meet the training needs of security personnel, by providing standardised practical training for those who seek a career in security. The course prepares participants to carry out their mandate as security professionals in a safe, effective and professional manner. To provide basic knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of uniformed security guards. This course is required for licensing as a security patrol emloyee in British Columbia.

ENVIRONMENTAL SECURITY AWARENESS
A fundamental concept in security design that is based on the premise that effective use and manipulation of the physical environment can reduce criminal behaviour.
This course introduces the basic principles of “awareness” of the environment and your surroundings while performing security duties. The duties of a professional security guard have become more onerous and demanding and there is an ever increasing need to be on top of your game. As security becomes more complex and an ever increasing need for reliable security services, reporting and observation a comprehensive understanding of your environment will ensure the client’s assets are well protected. This course will assist those who wish to hone their skill and become more adept at recognising security risk. The course will examine concepts and technologies introduced to enhance security, such as boundaries, fencing, technology, lighting, patrolling and command centers etc.

REPORT WRITING FOR PRIVATE SECURITY PROFESSIONALS
This course will assist the security individual to become a true professional with the ability to comprehensively and effectively communicate through well written reports. The course will lay out what a report is, how it is used to communicate and explain the different types of reports.

PATROL TACTICS AND TECHNIQUES
This course provides security guards with knowledge on the various types of patrol assignments such as foot and mobile patrols. The advantages and disadvantages of each will be discussed.
The patrol function is one of the most complex, difficult, and most highly visible of all security activities. One of the first things a security guard should be aware of is that a uniformed patrol force goes a long way in the areas of crime prevention, the apprehension of individuals
committing offences, and, in general, the preservation of the peace.
It is the primary reason that security is hired. Security guards are hired to protect people, property and information. A uniformed guard will help to deter crime just by being in an area.
When you do a patrol you widen the area that you are protecting.

Introduction to – Security Vulnerability Assessment
- Examine the differences between risk, threat, and vulnerability and then demonstrates how assessments are absolutely essential for organizational resilience.

- list the elements of an effective patrol;
- list the steps to be followed when preparing to conduct an effective patrol;
- describe the factors that facilitate effective powers of observation.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION
Conflict is an inevitable part of work. We’ve all seen situations where people with different goals and needs have clashed, and we’ve all witnessed the often intense personal animosity that can result. The fact that conflict exists, however, is not necessarily a bad thing. When you resolve it effectively, you can also eliminate many of the hidden problems that it brought to the surface. The course will provide the participants with a simple process to follow for conflict resolution in the workplace and to create confidence when dealing with conflict.

VIOLENCE IN THE WORKPLACE – WORKSAFE BC
The purpose of this course is to give a practical solution to developing a workplace violence prevention program. Verbal abuse, arguments, property damage, vandalism, sabotage, physical assaults, psychological trauma and rape are all examples of workplace violence.

Work place bullying and harassment is an issue of growing concern. It can take many forms from verbal abuse to aggression. This course provides workers, supervisors and managers the tools to recognise and to deal with bullying and harassment in the workplace.

PERSONAL SAFETY TRAINING
The course is designed to provide you with knowledge on personal safety and keeping safe in and around your work environment. The workplace can expose you to violent behaviours and this course will teach participants how to recognize violence and how to protect yourself.
The course will also provide the participant with the correct WorkSafe BC information as it relates responsibilities of the company the supervisor and the worker.
This course is recommended for employees dealing directly with the public and provides information on recognizing the warning signs before a violent incident occur. It includes demonstrations, scenarios and discussions of the skills to respond effectively to actual events.
